Since it’s National Chocolate Day, I figured it would be a great excuse to stop in and try out the treats at Grindstone Coffee and Donuts in Sag Harbor. Having not ventured in since the shop opened this past summer, I figure I’m pretty darn overdue.
There were several chocolate varieties up for (sticky) grabs when I visited this morning, including Cookies ‘N Cream, White Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Chocolate and Chili, Nutella and Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate. It was a tough choice but I ultimately went for the one that looked the glaziest, which was the PB and chocolate. Definitely not my norm but hey this is about reviewing and not just ordering for my particular palate.
I was surprised by how big an actual mouthful is of this doughnut. I think it’s the biggest, tallest of this type of baked good that I’ve ever eaten. Grindstone definitely makes donuts for the Hungry Man-type!
Even though it’s pretty light in texture, there’s something reminiscent of a cake donut in the eating of it. And taking a look at the bitten-into treat, it seems as if there’s a bit of the croissant technique at play here too, especially as the cooked dough has lots of air pockets that resemble the look of the French pastry.
Additionally, the slightly chewy cooked batter isn’t oversweet or cloying as some of the more mass-produced versions tend to be. On its own, it tastes kind of like my mother’s yeast dinner rolls but with a subtle in hint of sugar thrown in. But the glaze, ah the glaze, is what will drive your sweet tooth absolutely wild. Sticky, sugary, and tasting very much like an ooey-gooey peanut butter cup, it packs one powerful and flavorful punch. To paraphrase the commercials about another chocolate and peanut treat, one of these will surely satisfy.
