Is Poor the New Rich?

From Hillary Clinton proclaiming that “the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top” and saying that she wants to be “that champion” for “every day Americans” to Gwyneth Paltrow’s pledge to eat on $29 for the week, per the #FoodBankNYCChallenge in response to what America’s SNAP (food stamp) families have to live on, it seems that East Enders are embracing the art of frugality.

I’m curious. Will these acts of the privileged class, such as those of the newest Presidential contender and of the Goop luxe lifestyle website founder, draw positive attention and impact to the plight of poverty? Or will they backfire badly? What do you think?

  1. Hi Dawn: It looks like Im the 1st to comment so hoping it will start the conversation in a positive lite so that the outcome is not of that its enough money for people. Everyone’s circumstances are very different including the elderly, physically & emotionally ill. I sincerely hope that Gwyneth Paltrow who is a vegetarian, fit, healthy women documents the emotional thought patterns that go into navigating a super market with so little money & consider that many people do eat meat protein in there diet. In addition perhaps interviewing people who actually receive food stamps would be in order to show just what they do struggle with everyday and having to calculate literally for some to the penny what to buy & eat for themselves and there family. I live in an area where just west there is wealth and the east is families living in the woods because they are homeless, All of which are less then a mile in distance. Can the challenge be done of course anything can be accomplished when one sets there mind to it-But one week? Do a challenge where it shows not only the struggles of real families but also what the (food Stamp) program does not allow people to buy like sliced turkey cold cuts* when frozen meals are okay.
I have seen families have to put back “real food” because there is not enough money, A candy bar is $2.00.Please keep us posted with what transpires. Given Gwyneth Paltrow’s knowledge of health, fitness and how important calmness is to the mind & body-maybe she will be able to improve the system in many ways…Thanks for Sharing this, PEACE & SUNNY DAYS
